Manhunt on for more suspects after nine nabbed over fatal toddler abuse

BUKIT MERTAJAM – Police here have launched a manhunt for suspects who may have been involved in the fatal abuse of a toddler.

On Saturday night, medical staff at Seberang Jaya Hospital’s emergency room were stunned when an unidentified man showed up to hand over an unconscious one-year-old boy, claiming that the child had suddenly passed out.

Upon checks, there were severe signs of abuse on the child’s body. Despite doctors and other staff urgently administering medical procedures to revive the boy, he succumbed a short while later.

The stranger who brought him in then disappeared from the hospital during the frantic actions taking place at the ward.

Police were then alerted. They swung into action, picking up nine suspects to aid in the investigation

Bukit Mertajam police chief Tan Cheng San said in a statement that the suspects – four males and five females – were aged between 16 and 48.

They will be remanded to assist police in their investigations.

Those detained may face a murder charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

Tan did not rule out that more suspects may be apprehended in the case. – The Vibes, August 28, 2023
