THE death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck southwestern Japan earlier this week has risen to 34, up from 25 previously, according to the Kumamoto prefectural government.

At least six other people were seriously injured after the earthquake struck late on Tuesday, causing buildings to collapse, roads to rupture and disruptions to supply chains across affected areas.

The disaster has raised concerns over economic activity and logistics networks, with authorities continuing rescue and recovery efforts while assessing the full extent of the damage.

Nearly half of those killed were reported to have died in two major incidents involving industrial and commercial facilities, according to Reuters.

.A paper mill operated by Nippon Paper Industries suffered significant structural damage, while a possible gas explosion at an Aeon shopping mall also contributed to the casualties.

Emergency teams remain deployed as officials work to restore infrastructure, assess damaged facilities and support communities affected by the earthquake. - July 31, 2026
