PROGRESSIVE Democratic Party president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has expressed shock over how firearms could easily be available in Sarawak, following the Jan 1 gangland-style shooting at a coffee shop in Sibu, Sarawak.
Tiong, who is state assemblyman for Dudong said there are videos taken by the public circulating on social media that showed the shocking scene of the shooting in broad daylight in a crowded commercial centre.
"The videos showed the armed assailants brazenly shooting in the busy streets. "Where did such firearms come from?
"Such shocking crime incidents are not good for the safety of the community in Sibu and I hope the police can solve the case fast and find out if the incident is linked to any gang activities," he said in his social media chats with his constituents.
Tiong is also Bintulu MP and federal Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister.
Police already formed a special team on Jan 2 to hunt down two armed assailants who had carried out the daring public shooting, allegedly using semi-automatic pistols.
The two armed men on a motorcycle carried out the shooting around 5pm, pumping 10 shots at three male youths who were shot in the thighs, hands and legs.
Sibu district police chief Zulkipli Suhaili had said the police had recovered 10 spent bullet casings from the site of the shooting.
All three victims are in stable condition in the Sibu Hospital despite being shot in the thighs, legs and hands.
