MCA called on the Penang chief minister today to address the matter of high water tariffs in the state that are allegedly causing widespread unhappiness.

Party vice-president Datuk Tan Teik Cheng said several assemblymen have held press conferences to denounce the exorbitant jump in water tariffs.

"Chow Kon Yeow should explain to Penangites and immediately resolve the issue and not shift the blame onto the Penang Water Supply Corporation," he said in a statement.

"At a time when people are burdened with heavy household expenses, Penang Water Supply Corporation should not burden the people with higher utility bills, including for water.

"When Penangites received their latest water bills this month, they found that water tariffs had escalated by more than 200%, causing them to cry out in distress," said Tan.

He urged the Penang government to deeply reflect on the "unreasonable" hike. – May 23, 2024
