A TRAIN accident near Kampung Petagas in Putatan, Sabah claimed the life of a 41-year-old woman and left her 11-year-old son critically injured.

The incident occurred around 1:58 pm when both victims were struck by a train heading towards Kota Kinabalu from Beaufort while crossing the railway tracks.

According to the Fire and Rescue Department, a team of seven personnel from the Putatan Fire and Rescue Station was dispatched to the scene, arriving at 2:20 pm.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while her son, who was in a school uniform, suffered severe injuries, including the loss of a leg, as well as injuries to his hands and head. The woman was dragged for about 20 metres in the incident.

Putatan Fire and Rescue Station operations commander PBK II Linda Eslaowagis confirmed that the woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while her son was rushed to the hospital for further treatment.

Rescue personnel handed the remains over to the police for further investigations.

Authorities reminded the public that railway tracks are strictly off-limits to pedestrians, emphasising the serious safety risks involved.

The operation involved additional support from the police and the Ministry of Health (KKM).
