THE MCA today said that while it does not, in any way, encourage anyone to become addicted to alcoholic beverages or to drink excessively, the party remains steadfast in defending the fundamental freedoms of non-Muslim communities as enshrined under the Federal Constitution.

"That is, to practise their respective lifestyles without affecting other communities, such as consuming alcoholic beverages in moderation," said its secretary-general Chong Sin Woon.

He was responding to Amanah deputy president Datuk Seri Mujahid Yusof Rawa who had reportedly urged the MCA to help with curbing alcohol abuse.

He said this was more important than trying to win over a segment of voters by politicising the issue.

"If Mujahid feels that DAP has not been as vocal as MCA on this issue, then let MCA be bolder and more outspoken in defending the rights of Malaysians under the Federal Constitution.

"As Chinese New Year 2025 approaches, we extend our greetings of Gong Xi Fa Cai to Mujahid and his family," added Chong. - January 28, 2025
