UPGRADING of the Penang International Airport (PIA) in Bayan Lepas is progressing on schedule with 31% of the work underway.
State executive councillor in charge of infrastructure, Zairil Khir Johari said this after an inspection of the expansion and upgrading works.
He said that the project comprises three key work packages (WP), aimed at enhancing its infrastructure and operational capacity.
These include enabling works, airside facility improvements, and the construction of a new terminal building, said Zairil.
“As of Feb 15, 2025, the contractor for WP1 (Work Package One) has achieved 31% physical work progress.
“This package focuses on critical enabling, upgrading, and construction works, including the ancillary building, Air Traffic Control (ATC) Tower, Civil Aviation Authority Malaysia (CAAM) office, AVSEC Control Post, and local infrastructure works.
“The project was awarded in September 2024, and progress remains on track. WP1 is scheduled for completion by November 2025,” Zairil said.
As for the WP2, Zairil said it focuses on upgrading the airport apron, taxiway, airside drainage, utilities diversion, and other related infrastructure.
The WP3 tender is expected to be opened in May 2025.
This package will involve the construction of a new terminal and the renovation of the existing one, covering local infrastructure works, building services, and interior design enhancements.
“The new terminal is expected to be operational by 2027, while the entire project is projected for completion by 2028,” Zairil said.
This expansion initiative aims to accommodate growing passenger traffic and improve airport facilities, reinforcing the airport's role as a key regional aviation hub. – March 10, 2025
