THE family of six found dead in a car submerged in Sungai Korok, Jitra today are believed to have fought hard to escape but were unable to get out of the vehicle.
According to reports, they were found huddled together at the back and left side of the Proton Iswara.
Kedah Fire and Rescue Department Zone 1 chief Ahmad Aminuddin Abd Rahim said they are believed to have attempted to get out but failed.
"None of the windows were broken when the vehicle was found and rescuers had to break the glass during the recovery," he said.
The deceased were identified as Mohamad Azim Izat Ishak, 32, who was believed to be driving the car; his wife, Nurul Hidayah Khadijah Razman Efendi, 31; and their children — Putra Rayyan Nur Izzat, 9; Hawa Adriana, 8; Anayla Huma'ira, 7; and Tuah Ha Yder, a 6-month-old baby.
The family was reported missing by relatives after they failed to return home from a visit to Taman Aman, Jitra, last Saturday.
A patrol team later spotted a car submerged in Sungai Korok, about six metres deep and 25 feet wide.
The vehicle was found just a metre from the riverbank and upon retrieving the car, firefighters confirmed the bodies of the six missing people were inside.
After nearly two days underwater, the bodies had swollen, making removal through the car doors difficult.
Skid marks or tyre tracks near the riverbank suggest the car may have veered off the road before plunging into the water.
