REPAIR work on the leaking sewer pipe that caused the sinkhole incident on Jalan Burma in George Town last Sunday was completed today.

Penang City Council (MBPP) Mayor Datuk A Rajendran said the road has also been fully opened to vehicles.

“The repair work on the Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) sewer pipe was fully completed at 4am this morning, and Jalan Burma has also been fully opened,” he said via a WhatsApp message to reporters today

Previously, the media reported on the sinkhole incident that formed on Jalan Burma and the Jalan Transfer intersection, at about 9am, last Sunday.

It caused traffic congestion of almost three kilometres following road closures and diversions for safety reasons.

Rajendran on Monday said the replacement work was expected to take five days to complete with only one lane open between night and early morning.

IWK, in a statement, said it was also conducting an investigation into sewage assets throughout Penang with a comprehensive closed-circuit television (CCTV) inspection. - September 25, 2025
