AN Egyptian man was remanded for four days by the Ayer Keroh Magistrate's Court today after being suspected of assaulting, strangling and threatening to kill his wife, in an incident at a hotel in Banda Hilir yesterday.

The remand order against the 48-year-old suspect was issued by Magistrate N. Sivashangari from today until October 8 to assist investigations under Section 323 of the Penal Code and Section 18A of the Domestic Violence Act 1994, reported Kosmo!

According to sources, the incident occurred at about 10am after the 57-year-old woman found a cigarette box under her husband's pillow containing a glass tube and substances believed to be ganja and syabu before taking it.

When he found the material missing, the man became angry and a fight broke out between the two.

“During the argument, the suspect allegedly covered his wife’s face with a pillow and strangled the victim,” said the source.

According to the source, the suspect then forced the victim to hand over the drugs before he found the illegal substance in his wife's handbag and left the hotel.

The source added that the suspect returned to the hotel at around 11.30am and continued to wrap the dried leaf slices and smoke them while sipping liquor in front of the woman.

"Shortly after that, the argument continued, and the suspect slapped his wife on the cheek and hit the victim in the stomach several times.

"The man even pushed the woman towards the balcony as if he wanted to push her down before threatening to kill her," the source added.

The victim, who sustained injuries to her face, neck, abdomen and arms, sought treatment at Hospital Melaka before lodging a police report at the Banda Hilir Police Station on the same day.

Following the report, the suspect was detained and tested positive for cannabis. - October 5, 2025
