A MARRIED couple was burnt to death after the two-storey house they lived in was destroyed in a fire in Kampung Lausan, Batu 4, Kudat, last night.

In the incident, the victims, a 74-year-old elderly man and his 73-year-old wife, were found in the bedroom of the house.

Kudat Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) chief Darikson Galanang said his department received an emergency call at 11.58 pm, before 10 personnel and machinery were dispatched to the scene about six kilometres away.

"Our team arrived at the location at 12.36 am and found a two-storey non-permanent house 100 per cent burnt down.

"The firefighting operation faced difficulties due to the narrow path, including a small bridge and the low position of electric wires, which prevented the movement of fire engines to the scene of the incident," he said in a statement today.

He said the fire was fully controlled at 1.30 am, with the first victim being removed at 2 am, while the second victim was removed at about 3.50 am.

He said both victims were handed over to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) for further action and investigation.

"The operation was completely ended at 4.47 am after the situation was confirmed to be safe, and there was no further danger. The cause of the fire and the amount of loss were still under investigation," he said. – January 24, 2026
