THE PAS leadership needs to immediately name a new Opposition leader to replace Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, as it involves the image and dignity of Perikatan Nasional (PN).
Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin stated that Hamzah is no longer a member of Bersatu and PN, as he was sacked from the party; thus, he has no right to continue holding the position.
“I have already told them, and the council members know that Datuk Seri Hamzah is no longer eligible to sit there because he is not a member and that the position should be vacated and filled by a representative of a PAS MP.
“That is the decision, and it has been agreed upon," he said in a special interview with local media at the Bersatu headquarters.
Muhyiddin, who is also the PN Deputy Chairman, however, stated that PAS President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang had said they needed some time to discuss.
Muhyiddin added that according to the process, PAS needs to decide which MP should be the Leader of the Opposition and inform the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat of the candidate who should be taken to fill Hamzah's position.
"I want to ask for consideration through this medium so that the PAS leadership makes a decision immediately. Otherwise, it will affect the image of Perikatan Nasional.
"Datuk Seri Hamzah should feel ashamed because he has no locus standi; the validity of that can be questioned.
"So if there is no legitimacy, no locus standi, it cannot sit there anymore. It is not valid to sit there," Muhyiddin stressed.
“Hamzah previously became Opposition Leader because he was nominated by the party, and he is no longer eligible to be in that position,” he said.
Asked whether his stance contradicted the support of 13 Bersatu MPs to retain Hamzah as Leader of the Opposition, Muhyiddin stated that it was only the opinion of the MPs, not the party's decision. – March 3, 2026
