A SUSPECT who allegedly shot a man in Kampung Permatang Durian, Padang Serai, early on Saturday morning has been found to have a history of prior offences involving crime and drugs, police said.
Kulim deputy district police chief Tengku Mohd Faisal Tengku Yeng said the 42-year-old suspect has 13 previous criminal and drug-related records, while the 32-year-old victim also has 12 prior records linked to similar offences.
He said the suspect, a lorry driver, is believed to have had an argument with the victim, who is also his acquaintance, before opening fire.
“On March 21, 2026, at approximately 12.01am, the police received an emergency call regarding a shooting incident.
“The suspect is believed to have fired a single shot in front of the victim’s mother’s house, striking the victim’s right arm and chest before fleeing the scene,” he said during a press briefing at the Kulim district police headquarters on Tuesday.
Mohd Faisal said the victim was taken to Kulim Hospital for treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
He added that preliminary checks showed the gunshot did not affect any critical internal organs, and the exact motive behind the incident remains under investigation.
The suspect was arrested within 24 hours at a house in Kampung Naga Lilit, Padang Serai.
“Police also seized a .38 calibre revolver, 10 rounds of ammunition and two spent shell casings. The seizure also included a yellow Honda Civic and clothing belonging to the suspect believed to have been used during the incident,” he said.
The suspect has been remanded for six days until March 26 to assist investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code and Section 3 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971.
Mohd Faisal also advised the public against spreading speculation that could interfere with the ongoing investigation.
Previous reports indicated that the victim, a factory operator, sustained injuries to his right arm and chest after being shot in the early hours of Saturday. - March 24, 2026
