A FIRE broke out at a home in Taman Mantin, Nilai, on Friday night, tragically claiming the life of a mentally disabled woman in her 30s.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:30pm, while the victim was reportedly sleeping at the time of the blaze.

According to Nilai state assemblyman J Arul Kumar the woman was living alone in the house with her younger brother, who had left to buy food at the time of the fire.

"They lived together, just the two of them, and I was informed that it was a neighbour who called the fire department after noticing the fire," he said in a statement to Sinar Harian on Saturday.

“By the time her brother returned home, the house had already been completely engulfed in flames, and his sister was found dead in the bedroom,” he added.

The Fire and Rescue Department of Negeri Sembilan reported that two fire engines and a team of 14 officers and personnel were dispatched to the scene to battle the fire.

Upon arrival, the firefighters found that the 20 by 30-foot terrace house had been completely destroyed.

“Inside the main bedroom, the woman was found charred and was confirmed dead on the scene,” the fire department confirmed.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and authorities are continuing to look into the tragic incident. - April 4, 2026
