THE proposed extension of the railway line from Rantau Panjang in Pasir Mas, Kelantan, to Sungai Golok in Narathiwat, southern Thailand is expected to significantly strengthen transport connectivity and bilateral trade between the two countries.
Malaysian Ambassador to Thailand Datuk Wan Zaidi Wan Abdullah said the project, currently under consideration by the Malaysian government, is aimed at enhancing supply chain efficiency and facilitating smoother movement of goods across the border.
He added that Thailand has already begun conducting a feasibility study and environmental impact assessment as part of its broader double-track railway development plans.
“If realised, the route will improve the efficiency of cross-border cargo transport, reduce logistics costs, and speed up the delivery of goods between Malaysia, Thailand, and the Indochina countries,” he said on Thursday.
Wan Zaidi noted that rail transport remains one of the most efficient modes for bulk cargo, with the potential to significantly expand trade capacity and strengthen Malaysia and Thailand’s role in regional supply chains.
“Trains are the most efficient mode of transport for bulk cargo. They can boost trade capacity and strengthen the role of Malaysia and Thailand in the regional supply chain,” he said.
He also said improved rail connectivity would create new opportunities for commodity trading and manufacturing, while improving market access for small and medium enterprises operating in border areas.
According to Wan Zaidi, the strategic location of southern Thailand, which shares a border with Malaysia, continues to support strong cross-border interaction not only in trade, but also in tourism, education and social relations.
The ambassador made an official visit to Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat from April 7 to 10, marking his first visit to southern Thailand since assuming his post last year.
During the visit, he held meetings with provincial governors as well as officials from development, security and religious agencies, aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation and coordination between both countries. - April 10, 2026
