MIRI – A remote part of the Baram district in northern Sarawak is the latest area to be infected with Covid-19, as the state continues to register more new cases.
Telang Usan, roughly the size of Johor, recorded its first positive case today, according to the state Disaster Management Committee secretariat.
It said the patient lives in a remote settlement, and is believed to have been part of the active Rakut cluster near here. Telang Usan is a four-hour drive from Miri.
In Sibu, two new Covid-19 deaths, involving a 52-year-old man and 72-year-old woman, have been reported today.
“We extend our condolences to the families of the deceased,” the secretariat said, adding that the death toll from the pandemic in the state is now 30.
Sarawak reported 120 new cases today, with Sibu clocking in 52; Subis, 11; Miri, 10; Dalat and Bintulu nine each; Kanowit, six; and other districts between one and five cases.
In terms of warded patients, Sibu Hospital has 1,081 patients; Miri Hospital, 288; Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching, 155; Bintulu Hospital, 86; Kapit Hospital, 35; and Limbang Hospital has one.
The state has eight active clusters, with contact tracing is still being carried out. – The Vibes, January 25, 2021
