BUKIT MERTAJAM – The resignation of Kuala Langat MP Datuk Xavier Jayakumar as PKR vice-president, and his opting to support the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government as an independent, is an indication the party has leadership issues.
Seberang Jaya assemblyman Afif Bahardin said his sacking from PKR a year ago proved that the party does not have a clear direction, especially after many of the elected reps announced their support for the PN government.
“It’s been a year since I left PKR. The problem is not the party, but its leadership.
“So far, PN, led by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, has given clear leadership, and PN is ready to take over PKR seats in the next election,” he told The Vibes.
At 10am, Xavier, in a brief statement, announced his resignation as party vice-president and member, opting to support the PN administration as an independent.
He said he will continue to serve his constituency and support the government as an independent MP.
His departure from PKR makes him the third MP to cross over in recent weeks, with Julau’s Larry Sng and Tebrau’s Steven Choong also exiting the party to support Muhyiddin’s administration.
Asked whether Bersatu welcomed Xavier’s presence as a new member of the party, Afif, who is a Bersatu rep, said it is up to Xavier.
Afif said PN will accept any MP who wants to join the coalition, especially if they are supporting efforts to fight Covid-19 and revive the economy.
“I think many elected reps and politicians are beginning to realise the commitment shown by the PN government. Even in a crisis, we can handle it better than the previous administration.
“I myself, who joined the PH government, can feel a big difference when Muhyiddin leads the country.” – The Vibes, March 13, 2021
