MIRI – Two schools in the Lawas district of northern Sarawak that were supposed to reopen today were ordered to remain closed after several teachers were infected by Covid-19.
This directive was issued by the Education Ministry to SMK Trusan and SMK Merapok today.
They will not reopen until October 6, said Deputy Education Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin at a press conference in Kuching.
“Several teachers in the two Lawas schools were found infected.
“As a precaution, the reopening of the schools will be postponed to October 6 to allow measures to be taken to check the situation.
“We in the ministry are closely checking the ground situation there,” he said during a working visit to the state Education Department. He also inspected several schools in Kuching today.
Mohamad said the ministry is satisfied with the overall situation as far as the reopening of classes for Form 5 and 6 students are going.
He said most students have resumed in-person classes.
“There are still a small number of parents who hesitate to allow their kids back to school.
“We encourage them and assure them that necessary measures have been taken as far as safety and health are concerned,” he said.
Most teenagers are already vaccinated throughout the country, he added. – The Vibes, October 4, 2021
