MIRI – Another local opposition party, Parti Sedar Rakyat Sarawak (Sedar), has denied it is advocating for the state’s independence from Malaysia.
Its president Datuk Othman Abdillah said the party is merely advocating for Sarawak rights at the national level.
“Our party’s agenda does not include fighting for independence from Malaysia.
“Our party does not support any agenda that calls for independence from Malaysia,” he said. “Our party’s principle is to struggle to get the best for Sarawakians within Malaysia.
“That core principle has not changed despite Sedar being willing to work with other opposition parties to be a united front for GE15 (15th general election),” he said in a statement.
“We want to avoid multi-cornered fights so the opposition can have better chances of winning,” he said.
Sedar is the second opposition party in Sarawak over the past two days to publicly deny it is advocating independence.
Yesterday, Parti Sarawak Bersatu did the same, its youth chief Johnical Rayong adding that it has never agreed to form any alliances with other parties.
Rayong was responding to Parti Bumi Kenyalang president Voon Lee Shan’s announcement in Sibu yesterday that the party is forming a pact with four other opposition outfits to jointly contest as a united front in the upcoming GE15.
The others are Parti Aspirasi, Parti Sarawak Bersatu, Parti Bangsa Dayak Sarawak Baru and Sedar. – The Vibes, June 13, 2022
