KOTA KINABALU – Sabah MCA has lodged a police report against former attorney-general (AG) Tan Sri Tommy Thomas today for his letter written to lawyers appointed by a group claiming to be the heirs of the Sulu sultanate in 2019.
It said in a statement today that Thomas’s letter had jeopardised the sovereignty of Malaysia, and hopes the police will investigate any wrongdoing done by Thomas when he was the AG.
The group said that several news reports and social media reports have claimed that when Thomas was the AG during the Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration, he had written a letter to lawyers of the Sulu sultanate’s heirs, admitting Malaysia’s mistake for non-payments to the Sulu.
Thomas’ statement in the letter was reported to have caused Malaysia to lose in the arbitration proceedings in France, which had caused the court to demand Sabah pay RM63 billion to the Sulu descendants.
“There are a lot of claims saying that the arbitration proceeding in France had caused the ruling involving tens of billions of ringgit on Malaysia, and also jeopardised the sovereignty of a region, which is Sabah in Malaysia.
“So far, Thomas had yet to make any statement on the letter,” the group said.
Former finance minister Lim Gun Eng had also confirmed that the PH government had never discussed the Sulu claim, what more the letter that was written by Thomas in 2019.
Sabah MCA urged the police to investigate if the then PH cabinet at the time was involved in discussing the details in the letter with Thomas.
“Thomas as the AG at the time needs to explain to the people the contents of the letter in detail and with transparency. Sabah MCA urges the police to take necessary action against him if they find any wrongful conduct,” the group said.

The said letter was once mentioned by former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in March this year, alleging it was a “stupid” letter, for it had admitted that Malaysia regretted the cessation of payments, and offered to pay arrears from 2013 to 2019 amounting to RM48,300 to settle the case.
“I really don’t understand why he (Thomas) expressed ‘regret’. He regrets that ‘only’ ten members of our security personnel were killed, or what?” Najib asked in a Facebook post. – The Vibes, July 20, 2022.
