KUALA LUMPUR – The Pakatan Harapan (PH) presidential council has instructed its representatives in the steering committee of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to meet with their federal government counterparts immediately and discuss outstanding items in the MoU.
In a statement today, the council also urged its representatives to examine the matters stated by Ismail Sabri, which include matters related to political funding.
“The council took note of the prime minister’s statement two days ago that a new MoU will not be signed.
“This would mean the MoU signed on September 13, 2021 would continue to be in effect as long as Parliament has not been dissolved, as stated in Article 2.1 of the MoU,” it said.
The statement was jointly signed by PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook, and Upko president Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau.
In addition, the council said it is delighted and proud of the passing of the historic anti-hopping bill yesterday, adding that the amendment is a great victory for Malaysians.
With the passing of the constitutional amendment, it said, it believes the public’s confidence in the election process and democracy will begin to recover.
“However, there is still work to be done to correct the political and democratic situation in the country, as well as to ensure that treacherous episodes like the Sheraton Move will not happen again in the future.
“With the passing of this constitutional amendment, 15 of the 18 items agreed to in this MoU have been implemented, equivalent to 83.3%.
“Three items that have not been implemented are a 10-year limit for the prime minister, the tabling and approval of the Parliamentary Services Act, and the amendment of the Standing Orders to ensure proceedings are carried out in a more systematic and smooth manner in both the lower and upper Houses of Parliament.”
At the same time, it said the fourth item in the MoU, which is the independence of the judiciary, must be implemented at all times. – The Vibes, July 29, 2022
