KUALA LUMPUR – The Turun Malaysia movement will be holding a protest on August 20 in front of the Sogo shopping complex to mark the one-year anniversary of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s “failed” administration.
The movement said Ismail Sabri and his cabinet have failed to address the public’s needs such as on the rising cost of living, while scandals involving public funds and government institutions continue unabated.
Turun Malaysia announced its protest on Facebook and Twitter, listing other “failures” of Ismail Sabri’s government such as its lacklustre response to the massive floods late last year, as well the unpopular appointment of Umno politician Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman as Malaysia’s ambassador to Indonesia.
The protest group also said Ismail Sabri, who was defence minister for 17 months, would have had full knowledge of the purported mismanagement of the littoral combat ship project, among other issues.
“It is clear that appointments, policies, actions and the behaviour of the government led by Ismail Sabri and Umno have failed in all aspects as they only want positions for power without possessing any ideas or solutions to improve the country,” said Turun Malaysia in a statement today.
For its August 20 protest, it has set forth the following demands: a reduced cabinet, and for all the existing ministers to return their past year’s salaries and allowances to the public coffers.
On July 23, Turun Malaysia had also held a protest in the capital over rising living costs.
Their demands then were for ministers to take pay cuts, subsidy measures to be maintained, better assistance for those in need and for the government to control the prices of goods and ensure food security. – The Vibes, August 12, 2022
