KOTA KINABALU – Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal retained his presidency in Warisan unopposed as he announced plans for the party to adopt the anti-party hopping law into the party’s constitution.
Speaking at a press conference here today, Shafie also announced that the party’s deputy president, Datuk Darell Leiking, vice presidents Datuk Jaujan Sambokong, Datuk Junz Wong and Terence Siambun also won unopposed as the party expects to hold its election at the end of this month.
Kota Belud MP Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis also won the party’s youth chief unopposed.
The Semporna MP also announced the suspension of the party’s Lahad Datu, Kota Marudu and Beaufort divisions due to “some hiccups”.
“The party leadership has decided today to suspend these three divisions.
“In Beaufort, the division meeting could not be organised due to some incomplete paperwork.
“As for Kota Marudu and Lahad Datu, there had been some in-fighting. But we were able to contain the conflict for now.
“The two divisions will now be handled by the party headquarters, we will carry out their AGM either before or after the general election,” he said here after chairing the party supreme council meeting here, today.
Shafie said members’ support in the three divisions remain strong but they are unable to cast their vote in the party polls scheduled to be held on August 27.
Warisan is set to hold their party wing polls on August 26 and supreme council election on August 27 at the KDCA Hall.
He said about 500 members from these three divisions, however, would be allowed to attend the two-day event as observers.
On the adoption of the anti-party hopping law into the party’s constitution, Shafie said the move will make Warisan will be the first party in the country to embrace the anti-party hopping law in such a manner.
“It is our hope the state government will also adopt this law. All the other party presidents and most political leaders have shown their support for the anti-party hopping law,” he said.
Although Warisan is the party in the state with the most assemblymen and MPs, many of its elected representatives have since abandoned the party.
Sebatik assemblyman Hassan Amir left Warisan in March 2021, followed by Kukusan assemblyman Rina Jainal on June 5.
Sindumin assemblyman Datuk Yusof Yacob quit the party in October 2021 while Segama assemblyman and Lahad Datu MP Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi made a similar move in the same month. – The Vibes, August 15, 2022
