PETALING JAYA – The status of Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman contesting in the upcoming 15th general election (GE15) will be revealed this Wednesday.
Speaking during the party’s candidacy announcement, tonight, the incumbent Muar MP informed that the decision for him to defend his seat there will be finalised on that date.
“About my status in Muar, tune in this coming Wednesday,” said Syed Saddiq in a press conference, in response to the perception that he is a liability to Pakatan Harapan.
“As someone who trusts in the ‘Rule of Law’ system, it is important for us to follow the present view process (of the judiciary).
“I believe that I am innocent, and I will fight for the truth and justice.
“The system has given me a chance to defend myself, and I will not waste that opportunity,” he added.
Syed Saddiq’s response comes after the high court had yesterday ordered him to enter his defence in his criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of funds, and money laundering trial.
Judicial commissioner Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid, in delivering his decision, said the prosecution has successfully proved a prima facie case against the incumbent Muar MP.
The decision effectively means Syed Saddiq, 29, will have to defend himself in the four charges that were levelled against him.
In his first charge under Section 406 of the Penal Code, Syed Saddiq was accused of abetting Rafiq Hakim Razali with CBT of RM1 million in funds belonging to his party’s youth wing on March 6, 2020, when he was the chief.
The Muda co-founder was also charged under Section 403 of the Penal Code for allegedly misappropriating RM120,000 belonging to Armada Bumi Bersatu Enterprise for himself between April 8 and 21, 2018.
He also faces two counts of engaging in money laundering activities involving two transactions of RM50,000 each, believed to be proceeds from unlawful activities on June 16 and 19, 2018, and was charged under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001. – The Vibes, October 28, 2022
