MIRI – A landslide near the Murum hydroelectric dam in the Belaga district in central Sarawak has resulted in mudflows cutting off the access road for many living in the remote area.

After visiting the site and taking drone shots, Sarawak Pakatan Harapan information chief Abun Sui said the incident occurred along the hillslope adjacent to the trunk road linking the dam to Anting and other villages.

“The road from Murum Dam to Anting, other villages and settlements in Tegulang and Metalun have been cut off.

“The road is also the access to SRK Tegulang. I estimated that the landslide is at least 200m long and 50m wide,” he said in a statement.

Sui said he had alerted the relevant authorities and hoped for a swift response.

He added that Information from locals indicated that the disaster started on December 4.

“I hope the oil palm plantation companies will open up their routes to the public to bypass the affected area.”

The settlements in Tegulang and Metalun were built to house villagers that were relocated during the construction of the Murum Dam about 10 years ago.

There are around 10,000 residents in the settlements and affected villages. – The Vibes, December 7, 2022
