PUTRAJAYA – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is confident that MPs from parties in his unity government will support him in a vote of confidence when the Dewan Rakyat convenes next week.
“The leaders of Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional (BN), Gabungan Parti Sarawak, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah, Warisan, and several other parties have given their commitment.
“God-willing, we will be able to continue,” he told a press conference in Putrajaya today.
The vote of confidence for Anwar’s leadership of the government is one of the key agendas when the Dewan Rakyat sits for the first session of Parliament’s 15th term on December 19 and 20.
Anwar had called for the motion of confidence to avoid any doubt of support for his leadership in his maiden press conference after becoming prime minister on November 24.
Anwar today was asked if he was confident of passing the motion.
This follows Jelebu MP Jalaluddin Alias’s remarks to Sinar Harian yesterday that BN lawmakers have yet to receive instructions on how to vote on the upcoming motion.
However, Jalaluddin had also said that there was no need for an explicit order, as BN’s 30 MPs should be backing Anwar as prime minister.
He said MPs were also bound by party rules to follow what has been decided by the leadership.
Besides the parties in government, Anwar also has the support of MPs from Warisan, KDM, PBM and two independents. This gives him a total of 148 MPs out of 222 in the Dewan Rakyat. – The Vibes, December 14, 2022
