KUALA LUMPUR – Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) president Larry Sng had purportedly taken matters into his own hands when he decided to be part of the unity government led by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, according to one of its leaders.
Lembah Jaya assemblyman Haniza Mohamed Talha said Sng’s decision to cooperate with the other parties was done in his own interests, and that party members were kept in the dark over the matter.
Haniza also noted how prior to the 15th general election, Sng had threatened candidates contesting in the polls to abide by his wishes via appointment letters issued then, but stopped short of providing details.
“His immature behaviour is evident through his Facebook post, in which he had sulked over not being named as part of the cabinet lineup announced by the prime minister recently,” she said in a statement today.
“His actions clearly show he doesn’t think at all about the party’s wishes and only acts in his own personal interest.
“Sng has used this party as a stepping stone to obtain influence and position at the federal level, and does not display the values held by PBM to develop Malaysia.”
In this regard, Haniza said she and the other party leaders outright rejected Sng’s leadership as president of PBM.
The Vibes has reached out to Sng, who is the Julau MP, for comment, but has yet to receive a response.
Haniza, who contested and lost in last month’s general election, is a close ally of Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin, the former PKR and Bersatu leader who is currently mired in infighting with Sng over PBM’s presidency.
Zuraida and Sng have been squabbling since October, after the former’s faction announced that she is now officially the new party president, supposedly after the matter was formalised in the party’s annual general assembly earlier that month.
Sng maintained that he remains the party number one, and went on to suspend Zuraida and a dozen other Supreme Council members on October 29, including Haniza, just days ahead of the election campaigning.
The duo appeared to have put their differences aside when PBM’s communications unit issued a statement on November 2 stating that the row involving the leaders had been internally resolved.
However, last Tuesday, Sng issued an ultimatum to Zuraida to respond to her suspension and show cause letter by the end of the week or face the sack, after her purported resignation letter dated November 1 circulated on social media.
Yesterday, Zuraida rebuked Sng for purportedly contradicting a resolution agreed to by PBM’s highest governing body in June to name the former as the party’s president designate.
In a statement, she said Sng also acted against the wishes of the majority of the party’s grassroots, leaders, and Supreme Council members by abusing his authority to remain in power.
Haniza said the current mess PBM is in can be blamed on Sng turning his back on the party’s decision during its annual general assembly in October to officially name Zuraida the new president.
“It is only appropriate for Sng to relinquish his position to Zuraida, as had been agreed by all PBM members, and not to manipulate the situation,” she said.
She also urged the Registrar of Societies (RoS) to probe Sng’s legitimacy as president following the decision by PBM’s annual general assembly to have Zuraida officially take over the role.
RoS had on October 30 confirmed that based on available documents, Sng remains the legitimate party president. – The Vibes, December 26, 2022
