KUALA LUMPUR – Pending an upgrade to the KLIA aerotrain, several measures will be taken to ease passenger movement between terminals at the airport, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
This includes adding more shuttle buses to ferry passengers between terminals starting in March, and allowing more aircraft to park at or operate from the main terminal, he said in a statement on Facebook.
“Wide-bodied aircraft like the A350 used for international flights will be allowed to park at the main terminal, subject to bay availability.
“As all domestic flights will also operate from the main terminal, it will help reduce usage as passengers will be able to walk straight to the immigration counters and baggage collection area, which are located in the same building,” he said.
Only passengers in transit will still have to use the aerotrain, or shuttle bus if they wish, to move between the main and satellite terminal, he added.
The shuttle buses between the two buildings will operate at all times and take four minutes for a one-way journey, he also said.
The aerotrain service at KLIA has been reduced to limited operating times in recent months. Loke said this was due to there being only one set of trains that is in operation.
“Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has decided to upgrade the aerotrain system and has procured one set of an aerotrain, but this project will only be completed and the train operable in 24 months,” Loke said.
His statement followed a visit he made to KLIA yesterday to check on its operations.
Other measures to overcome limited aerotrain availability include having all MAHB staff and retail workers at the airport use only the shuttle bus to move between terminals.
Only pilots and cabin crew are allowed to use the aerotrain. – The Vibes, January 7, 2023
