KUALA LUMPUR – Police in Ampang Jaya have arrested a local man this morning after he went on a rampage while armed with a meat cleaver.

In a statement, police said they arrived at the scene of the incident at an apartment complex in Taman Lembah Maju, after receiving calls regarding a man running amok in the area with a weapon.

The incident was caught on camera, and clips shared on social media showed the 45-year-old barber directing his anger toward police personnel, going as far as threatening them with a cleaver as they attempted to subdue him.

However, the suspect was arrested after about ten minutes following a short scuffle.

Police said following the arrest, the suspect’s cleaver was confiscated along with a raffia string measuring 30cm. The suspect was immediately taken to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) for treatment.

The statement said the suspect is a mental patient with documents verifying his status, and has past records at HKL. The suspect is undergoing treatment in the hospital’s yellow ward, police said.

Police said the incident is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code, which is punishable by a fine or imprisonment of up to two years, or both. – The Vibes, January 18, 2023
