KUALA LUMPUR – Deputy PKR Youth chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim has been appointed as Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s political secretary at the Finance Ministry.
The prime minister, who is also finance minister, confirmed the matter in a Facebook post today, after Kamil and nine other political secretaries took their oaths of secrecy before him.
The others who participated in the ceremony this morning include Datuk Suraya Yaacob, who will serve the law and institutional reform minister, Arul Kumar Jambunathan (transport), Datuk Ton Zalani Mat Darus (defence), Datuk Rizam Ismail (international trade and industry), and Yap Yee Vonne (youth and sports).
“May they carry out the trust that has been accorded to them with full sincerity and integrity,” Anwar said.
In a Twitter and Facebook update, Kamil expressed his gratitude for the trust placed by Anwar in appointing him to such a key position.
“God willing, I will take on this responsibility with full humbleness and honesty.”
He also shared photos of the oath-taking ceremony and one of him and Anwar exchanging handshakes.
Kamil’s appointment comes close to two months after PKR’s international bureau chairman Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin took on the role of Anwar's chief political secretary.
Shamsul officially took his oath of secrecy on December 23, along with former Alor Star MP Chan Ming Kai and Ahmad Farhan Fauzi, who were both also appointed as Anwar’s political secretaries.
In the PKR election last year, Kamil contested and won the race for the party’s youth number two post, defeating Chua Wei Kiat in a tight affair.
He entered the party polls in the same team as Adam Adli Abdul Halim, who became the youth chief.
In the recently concluded 15th general election, Kamil was nominated by the party to contest in the Padang Rengas federal constituency, a Barisan Nasional (BN) stronghold.
He finished last in a three-cornered fight, with Perikatan Nasional’s Azahari Hasan emerging victorious, the first time BN has lost there. – The Vibes, January 27, 2023
