KUALA LUMPUR – All Malaysian citizens aged 60 and above will be exempted from the entrance fee to the Kepong Botanic Gardens starting March 21, 2023.
Forest Research Institute Malaysia director-general Ismail Parlan announced this at the launching of a talk series on wetlands at the FRIM research gallery here today.
Ismail also announced that the entrance fee will be waived for all visitors on selected forestry and environmental-related days such as International Day of Forests on March 21, International Day for Biological Diversity on May 20, and World Environment Day on June 5.
Meanwhile, FRIM said today’s talk, held in conjunction with World Wetlands Day celebrated annually on February 2, was attended by 30 participants aged between 8 and 69 years.
The talk entitled “No Wetlands, No Seafood?” highlighted the importance of wetland conservation.
FRIM mangrove forest expert Tariq Mubarak Husin, who took part in the discussion, said there is a need for wetland conservation for the continued benefits of the ecosystem, not only for food security, but also for coastal protection, erosion control, flood regulation, carbon storage, livelihood, and ecotourism.
This is the first session in a series of talks by FRIM researchers this year.
The subsequent talks will be held in conjunction with IDF in March 2023; Earth Day (April 2023); International Day for Biological Diversity (May 2023); and World Firefly Day (July 2023). – Bernama, February 19, 2023
