Johor floods worsen, evacuees rise to 42,704

KUALA LUMPUR – The flood situation in several states worsened as the number of evacuees at relief centres rose to 46,683 people tonight compared to 40,854 this evening.

Johor continued to register the highest number of evacuees, with 42,704 people, followed by Pahang (2,860), Negri Sembilan (613), Melaka (448), and Selangor (58).

In Johor, Kulai district was hit by floods again, bringing the number of affected districts back to 10 as the number of evacuees rose to 42,704 people as of 8pm compared to 37,258 people at 2pm.

Segamat remained the worst-hit district, with 13,292 evacuees from 3,888 families, followed by Batu Pahat (12,286 people from 3,558 families); Kluang (5,292 people from 1,543 families); Muar (3,862 people from 1,140 families); Kota Tinggi (3,257 people from 873 families); Tangkak (2,912 people from 866 families); Mersing (911 people from 264 families); Johor Baru (517 people from 178 families); Pontian (327 people from 87 families), and Kulai (48 people from 11 families).

In Pahang, the number of evacuees also rose tonight to 2,860 people at 23 relief centres compared to 2,388 at 21 centres this evening. Rompin still registered the highest number of evacuees with 2,496 people, followed by Temerloh with 306 people, while Maran and Bera are housing 29 evacuees each. 

Meanwhile, floods have receded in Jerantut and the last relief centre closed at 6.30 pm. 

The number of evacuees also rose in Melaka, with 448 evacuees from 118 families at 8pm compared to 380 people from 97 families at 2pm. The evacuees are being housed in five relief centres, while the centre at SK Chohong was closed at 3pm.

In Jasin district, 63 people from 13 families are being housed at SK Seri Mendapat, 129 people from 31 families at SK Parit Penghulu, 62 people from 24 families at SK Parit Gantong, and 179 people from 43 families at SK Batu Gajah, while in Alor Gajah district, 15 families from seven families are at Balai Raya Bukit Tambun.

Meanwhile in Negri Sembilan, the number of evacuees continued to drop, with 613 people from 153 families remaining in four relief centres in Tampin as of 8pm compared to 711 people at noon.

Finally, in Selangor, the number of evacuees has also dropped to 58 people from 14 families compared to 62 people from 15 families as of 7.30pm. Two relief centres at SK Merbau Sempak and Dewan MPKS Desa Coalfields, Sg Buloh are still currently housing the evacuees. – Bernama, March 4, 2023
