JOHOR BARU – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim took to social media today to congratulate Malaysian-born actress Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh for clinching an Academy Award.
Singing praises for the Oscar winner, Anwar pointed out that Yeoh, who was born in Ipoh, Perak, is also the first artiste from the region to win the award.
“In creating history by being not just the first Malaysian but the very first Asian actress to win in this category, we take enormous pride in her achievement, adding to a long list of successes and capping a critically acclaimed acting career spanning decades,” Anwar said in a statement posted on Facebook.
“Coupled with this latest accomplishment, Michelle’s illustrious and exemplary career in this field will certainly continue to be a source of great inspiration and motivation to our homegrown actors and actresses, and provide even greater impetus to the growth of our local industry.”

Earlier today, Yeoh won an Oscar in the Best Actress category for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the comedy-drama explores the relationship between Yeoh, who plays Evelyn Wang – a middle-aged Chinese American immigrant – and her daughter Joy, played by Stephanie Hsu.
In winning the award, Yeoh beat Cate Blanchett, Ana de Armas, Andrea Riseborough, and Michelle Williams. – The Vibes, March 13, 2023
