KUALA LUMPUR – A memorandum for the Institutional Reforms Committee (IRC) report to be made public will be brought to the cabinet soon, said Law and Institutional Reform Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

In a parliamentary reply, she said the IRC report by the Council of Eminent Persons was prepared in 2018 with the purpose of studying and examining institutional reform proposals identified by the government.

“The report contains various recommendations and views regarding the shortcomings and weaknesses of existing government institutions.

“The inputs expressed in this report will also be taken into account in the proposed institutional reform that will be implemented,” she stated in the written reply.

Azalina’s response came after Azahari Hasan (Padang Rengas-PN) had asked the prime minister about revealing the IRC’s 2018 report.

According to Free Malaysia Today, former Malaysian Bar president Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan had urged the government to release the report so that it can focus on strengthening the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and making it accountable to the cabinet.

The committee, she reportedly said, made numerous recommendations on the MACC; Sedition Act; Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012, or Sosma; police misconduct; the death penalty; and other matters. – The Vibes, March 14, 2023
