KUALA LUMPUR – Seat negotiations among parties within the unity government are proceeding well ahead of the state elections expected later this year, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Tambun MP, however, said that the matter is still being discussed within the joint committee consisting of leaders from all government parties.

“There is good progress but the matter is still being discussed by the committee consisting of all party representatives,” he said briefly to the press after chairing the second unity government secretariat meeting at Umno's headquarters in Menara Dato’ Onn, here, this evening.

Similarly, Anwar also said the secretariat will be announcing a special congress for the unity government to be held “soon”.

However, he did not elaborate further on the details of the upcoming unity government congress.

The unity government consists of 20 parties with the majority bloc comprising Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional, Gabungan Parti Sarawak, and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah coalitions.

Last month, the menteris besar and chief ministers of six states – Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Penang, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu – agreed to consider dissolving their respective state assemblies in the last two weeks of June, according to Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

Amirudin said the consensus would be reached by the leaders of the respective parties before being presented for the consent of the rulers and governors. – The Vibes, March 19, 2023
