KUALA LUMPUR – A member of the Dewan Negara today proposed that the government tighten rules for e-commerce businesses to stop the sale of counterfeit beauty and medical products.
Senator Datuk Seri Zurainah Musa said the existing regulations are inadequate as those managing e-commerce platforms do not take the initiative to monitor traders closely, other than focusing on their business capital and profits from each sale.
“They only delete the sales ads after receiving complaints. We have to tighten the rules, and put the burden on platform providers to remove fake products or be subject to a hefty penalty,” she said during the Supply Bill 2023 debate in the Dewan Negara today.
In the same session, Senator Datuk A. Kesavadas Nair recommended that the Health Ministry regulate the treatment costs for public and private hospitals so that they are standardised in creating a universal insurance scheme to build a holistic health ecosystem for the community.
“If implemented carefully and correctly, this can solve various major problems faced by the public medical sector, from ward congestion to human resource management in the ministry and many more,” he said.
Meanwhile, Senator Datuk Ras Adiba Radzi proposed that the Human Resources Ministry implement a specific initiative to create job opportunities involving persons with disabilities.
She said that a one-size-fits-all policy is not suitable in planning for rehabilitation involving employment prospects, and requested that job opportunities and entrepreneurship be stimulated by the government in collaboration with the various departments, agencies and government-linked companies.
Senator Ros Suryati Alang suggested that the government review the maximum 10-year personal loan repayment period and extend it to 15 to 20 years to reduce the burden of monthly payments.
