MIRI – A woman here claimed she was cheated of RM120,900 by an online foreign boyfriend who duped her into making numerous online bank transactions.
The woman in her fifties who works in the administrative section of a school here lodged a report at the Miri central police station.
Miri police chief Alexson Naga Chabu said the woman lodged the report on April 28, claiming she had been cheated via 30 online bank transactions she made to the foreigner through a third-party bank account.
“The woman in her police report said she got to know the suspect via online chat links in August last year.
“She said that over the past few months, the suspect told her he had fallen in love with her.
“The woman said the suspect said he wanted to come to Malaysia to meet her.
“Soon after, he started asking her for money by telling her he needed financial help.
“She said that she had made up to 30 monetary transactions to the suspect via a third-party account of up to RM120,900.
“She lodged a police report after the suspect stopped contacting her and she could no longer contact him,” Alexson said in a press statement.
He advised the public not to be easily duped by online acquaintances, especially those who post good-looking or enticing photos.
He also warned those who are active on social media chats not to disclose personal information about themselves. – The Vibes, April 30, 2023
