PETALING JAYA - Muar MP Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman was today sentenced to seven years jail, a RM10 million fine and two strokes of the cane.

This after he was convicted on four charges of abetting in criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of property and money laundering linked to RM1.12 million belonging to Armada — the youth wing of Bersatu.

Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid earlier said the defence had failed to raise a reasonable doubt in the prosecution’s case.

The former Youth and Sports Minister was sentenced to three years' jail and one stroke of the cane for CBT; two years' jail and a stroke of the cane for embezzlement of assets; and two years' jail and RM5 million fine for each charge of money laundering.

The jail sentences are to run concurrently.

In handing down the sentence, Azhar said he had taken into consideration all mitigation arguments by the defence and the prosecution, including those of public interest and of the accused.

The court allowed Syed Saddiq's application for a stay of execution pending appeal.

Earlier, the Muda president was represented by counsel Gobind Singh Deo while deputy public prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin prosecuted the case.
