THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission discovered about RM5 million in foreign currency after they raided an apartment believed to be used by a politician as a safe house, reported The Star.
The report said the raid was carried out following the detention of two individuals, including a senior executive from the former Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI).
The individual was detained on Thursday in connection with bribery related to a sand mining concession.
Sources indicate that both suspects have ties to a prominent politician who previously held significant political influence in Selangor.
"After their arrest, one of the suspects revealed the existence of a safe house belonging to an influential politician, used to store bribe money," the source said.
The raid on the safe house in Kuala Lumpur took place at 10pm on Saturday and the apartment unit was reportedly rented by a businessman.
The raiding team discovered USD1,529,000 (approximately RM5 million) in cash. It is believed the money was intended for the politician's political activities, reported The Star.
"Investigators suspect that the money was provided by an unidentified individual and stored by the businessman at the direction of the politician involved," the source added.
MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the investigation, conducted under Section 16 of the MACC Act 2009, is still in the early stages.
One of the suspects detained has been remanded for five days, while the other was ordered to be released by the court due to health issues.
MACC also seized 15 bank accounts belonging to individuals and companies for further investigation. - October 13, 2024
