HUMAN Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong will raise the issue of road safety and the need for authorities to pay more attention to lorries, trailers and containers at the next Cabinet meeting.
This follows the recent tragic accident in Bukit Mertajam which claimed the life of a 21-year-old woman.
Lee Zi Rou was killed on the spot after her car was crushed by a container which slipped off a trailer while she waited at the traffic lights junction along Jalan Bukit Tengah.
The unsecured container slammed onto the roof of Lee's vehicle, killing her almost instantly.
The victim managed to make a call to her mother Lim Xiao Ling with the parting words: "Mummy, I'm in so much pain"
Many motorists here have repeatedly complained about the reckless driving of some heavy vehicles, which tend to become bullies on the roads.
Sim visited Lim, a single mother earlier today with the state DAP leadership where he called on the need for road safety to be observed by all users, especially heavy vehicles.
Present were state DAP leaders Gooi Zi Sen, Heng Lee Lee, Lim Swee Khim, Phee Syn Tze and Machang Bubuk assemblyman Lee Khai Loon.
"We must ensure that all big truckers abide by road regulations and safety."
Sim also handed over RM10,000 on behalf of Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook to the grieving family and the state also extended RM1,000 in aid.
Lim would also receive a monthly contribution of RM1,300 from the Social Security Organisation (Sosco) following the death of her second eldest daughter.
Her siblings were seen sobbing as Sim paid his last respects.
Sim said that he was told that the police plan to charge the driver and the remand would be extended to facilitate investigations.
He also said that Sosco plans to expand its road safety campaign in collaboration with other government agencies to ensure that workers are safe when commuting to work.
The campaign is based on instilling a safety attitude among road users. - The Vibes, November 16, 2024
