FORMER PKR vice-president Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin has been ordered to pay RM100,000 for breaching a bond with her former party, instead of the initial RM10 million.

Putrajaya Court of Appeal judge Datuk See Mee Chun said the sum of RM10 million cannot be construed as reasonable compensation.

“The bench found it to be unreasonable, extravagant, and unconscionable, and not in proportion to the legitimate interest sought to be protected.

"The High Court judge had also found that Zuraida had admitted the substantial value provided by the party far exceeds RM10 million in the bond," See said.

The other judges on the three-judge panel were Justices Azman Abdullah and Ahmad Kamal Md Shahid.

The court also awarded costs of RM40,000 to Zuraida.

In 2020, PKR, through its secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, initiated the lawsuit, alleging that Zuraida violated the terms of the bond she had signed with the party.

Zuraida, in her defence, claimed she was forced to sign the bond to become a candidate in the 14th General Election in 2018.

Zuraida, who was present during the proceeding, later told reporters that she accepted the court’s decision.

“I treat it as a donation to the party,” she said, adding sarcastically that she would make the payment in RM1 notes. - December 11, 2024
