THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has remanded two individuals on suspicion of being involved in a syndicate that managed the illegal purchase of babies and the issuance of birth certificates for a fee of approximately RM10,000.
The five-day remand order until April 26, 2025, was issued by Magistrate Mohamed Redza Azhar Rezali after MACC made the application at the Shah Alam Magistrate's Court, Selangor, this morning.
According to sources, the suspects - two women in their 40s, were arrested at around 1pm yesterday when they appeared to give statements at the Selangor MACC office.
“Initial investigations found that the suspects are believed to have committed the act around 2023 by requesting and accepting a bribe of approximately RM10,000 which was deposited through the agent’s bank account.
“Meanwhile, another suspect who works at a private hospital in Melaka is suspected of impersonating a National Registration Department (NRD) officer to obtain birth certificates using false details to confirm the birth of babies managed by the agent when there were no records of the baby’s birth at the hospital involved.
“This Op Child is a continuation of Op Birth involving agents and syndicates,” said the source.
Meanwhile, Selangor MACC Director, Hairuzam Mohmad Amin@Hamim, when contacted, confirmed the arrests and said that the case is being investigated under Section 17 of the MACC Act 2009.
He also did not rule out the possibility that several follow-up arrests would be made. – April 22, 2025
