PERIKATAN Nasional (PN) will announce a new Opposition Leader from PAS before the end of March after several internal party processes are completed.

PN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said the decision on the individual who will hold the position is still under discussion and will be finalised in the near future.

“The meeting also decided that the position of Leader of the Opposition in the Malaysian Parliament will be held by a PAS MP.

“His name will be announced before the end of this month after several internal party processes are implemented,” he said.

He said this at a press conference after chairing the first PN Supreme Leadership Council Meeting for 2026 in Bandar Tun Razak, today.

In addition, PAS will also decide on the candidate and will consider the views of members of Parliament, but it is not binding.

“We can hold engagement sessions, discussions so that we have a consensus in the relevant determination (Leader of the Opposition), information and so on,” he explained.

Samsuri said that so far, the position of Opposition Leader is still held by Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin until an official announcement is made.

He said that PN will also inform the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat about the new appointment after the decision is finalised.

In addition, the meeting also discussed the coalition’s preparations to face the Melaka State Election (PRN), which is expected to be held soon.

According to him, PN has also begun to formulate a strategy to face the 16th General Election (GE16), including holding several discussions and planning sessions among the party leadership.

Meanwhile, he informed that today's meeting approved several new appointments in the PN leadership.

Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Datuk Dr Dominic Lau, Punithan Paramsiven and Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man were appointed as deputy chairmen, while Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan is now PN secretary-general.

There are three deputy secretaries-general - Datuk Seri Mohd Azmin Ali, Wong Chia Zhen and Datuk Sivakumar Krishnan.

Tan Sri Anuar Musa has been named the new Information Chief. – March 14, 2026
