PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim called for elections to be a competitive arena between political parties and reiterated that it should never be associated with royal institutions.
He said this when commenting on Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) President Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, who allegedly made sarcastic remarks against the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail (TMJ), during a recent speech at a programme.
Anwar said he has a good relationship and understanding with TMJ and hopes that all parties will not stir up trouble over the issue.
“Let’s not heat things up. He (Mohamad Sabu) only gave his views and did not insult anyone. I also had very good discussions with TMJ; the understanding is very good.
“This is an election, let it be between parties. Don't link the royalty,” he said.
Mohamad, when speaking at the PH candidate announcement ceremony for the Johor State Election (PRN) in Bukit Gambir on Monday, said the Johor PRN must be held fairly by allowing competition between political parties without the emergence of other 'parties' that Pakatan Harapan (PH) cannot fight.
He said that such 'interference' cannot change the country's democratic practices solely to fulfil political interests or certain individuals.
“The focus at the moment is to ensure that the democratic process runs smoothly, maturely and harmoniously without creating issues that could affect the Johor state election campaign,” added Anwar. – June 24, 2026
