KUALA LUMPUR – Pos Malaysia has kicked off a special Mel Rakyat campaign that encourages Malaysians to send handwritten letters to their relatives or friends for free.
The campaign, which began yesterday and will last until October 31, is held in conjunction with World Post Day 2021 and in tandem with the government’s Keluarga Malaysia concept.
Through the campaign, Pos Malaysia is encouraging Malaysians to stay in touch by sending every household a free “letter” to mail to a loved one.
Pos Malaysia group chief executive Charles Brewer said the company is expecting more than six million postage-paid letters arriving at residential address across the country starting October 7.
The campaign, which carries the tagline “Honouring Our Past, Connecting Our Future”, is also aimed at reconnecting Malaysians who have been separated from their loved ones for almost two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic and related travel restrictions.
“We know how tough the last 20 months have been for many, and how difficult it has been for people to see each other and stay in touch,” Brewer said in a statement.
“Meaningful connection is vital for our emotional health, sense of community, and overall well-being. We want to encourage you to write to your friends, families, and loved ones, and tell them how much they mean to you.
“Pos Malaysia wants everyone to stay safe and stay in touch with the people who matter to them.”
He said the campaign also celebrates Pos Malaysia’s rich history that has spanned over 200 years, which reaffirms the company’s core purpose of connecting all Malaysians.
World Post Day is a United Nations-endorsed celebration that usually falls on October 9 every year and marks the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874. It is celebrated by postal services across the globe.
The UPU was also the start of the global communications revolution, introducing the ability for everyone to send letters to others all over the world.
“As well as saying thank you to all Malaysians for their continued support for Pos Malaysia, we also want to thank the more than 20,000 Pos Malaysia employees who continue to do amazing things – they deliver the smile in the last mile each and every day,” Brewer said.
He added that Malaysians can send Mel Rakyat with their messages, doodles or little notes to anyone and anywhere within Malaysia by dropping the letters into any one of Pos Malaysia’s red postboxes, or by handing them to a friendly neighbourhood postman, no stamps required.
The campaign also encourages Malaysians to share their stories, photos, and videos on social media of them sending or receiving their Mel Rakyat by using the #TerusBerhubung, #KeepingYouConnected, #pos4you, #PosMalaysia, #WPD2021, #KeluargaMalaysia, and #Strongertogether hashtags.
Outside the campaign, Mel Rakyat is a regular feature in Pos Malaysia that provides free service for non-commercial letter delivery within the country via a special paper issued by the licensee that cannot contain any attachments. – The Vibes, October 5, 2021
