GEORGE TOWN – Two elected representatives from Penang are on the mend after suffering injuries following two separate incidents towards the end of last week.

Both are linked to the late DAP chairman Karpal Singh, one of them being his eldest son, while the other is a prominent defence lawyer who chambered under his legal firm here.

State executive councillor Jagdeep Singh Deo is presently recuperating at a private hospital, here, following a surgical procedure to treat his fractured ankle yesterday.

It is learnt that Jagdeep sustained the injury following a brief fracas with a German national, who is a permanent resident here.

According to a former aide who spoke on the condition of anonymity, Jagdeep was dining with his family at a restaurant in Tg Bungah last Thursday evening.

Jagdeep was apparently involved in a misunderstanding with the German and during a brief altercation, he was pushed and subsequently slipped in the process.

Both Jagdeep’s sons who were present tried to intervene but the man pushed them aside before driving off.

According to the aide, the foreigner was believed to be intoxicated during the incident and described the incident as simply a misunderstanding.

Meanwhile, police responded swiftly, detaining the suspect just hours after the alleged assault took place.

State chief police officer Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, who confirmed the incident, said that the suspect was remanded for two days to facilitate the investigation.

He is expected to elaborate when he meets the media later today.

Jagdeep is an outspoken state exco member here, particularly on issues related to his portfolios of housing and local government.

Recently, he drew attention when he pushed across a plan to ban short-term stays at high-rise residential buildings in the state, stating that Penang wants to become the first in the country to enact such legislation.

Meanwhile, Jagdeep’s DAP colleague and Jelutong MP R.S.N. Rayer also suffered injuries early last Friday after his Toyota Alphard crashed into a side railing at a road near Batang Kali.

Rayer was en route to a protest in Parliament that was organised by the Malaysian Bar.

The former two-term Seri Delima assemblyman suffered abrasions to his left arm.

There were also concerns that he may have suffered a slight concussion as the vehicle’s airbag immediately deployed during the crash.
