KUALA LUMPUR – PAS has expressed its support for Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s call for unity among Malays in the country, saying the party remains committed on this front.

In a brief statement late yesterday, party secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan also warned PAS members from straying from this principle or they will face disciplinary action.

“PAS concurs with His Majesty that Islam always encourages humankind to be united and not fractured, in line with the orders of the Holy Quran.

“As such, PAS remains committed to the ummah unity agenda among Malay Muslims in the country, while at the same time strengthening national unity among all the multiracial Malaysians.

“We will take stern action against any (party) leaders and members who ignore unity and encourage division among the rakyat,” he said.

Takiyuddin was responding to Sultan Sharafuddin’s statement yesterday that he views the factionalism among the Malays, particularly involving politician leaders, as capable of threatening the unity and harmony of Malaysia’s multiracial society and political stability.

In this regard, the sultan urged for a stop to this persisting problem to ensure interests of Malays are preserved without setting aside the rights of non-Malays.

“I have no intention to interfere in the political and administrative affairs of the country.

“However, I feel responsible to provide advice and my views to correct the situation.

“If Malay political leaders fail to show responsible and good leadership, they will lose the respect of other races, and also support from them,” the sultan said in a statement today.

His Majesty also urged Malay political leaders to cooperate with non-Malay leaders in prioritising development for the well-being of the rakyat.

I watched the film Mat Kilau that depicted how factions among the Malays can result in external influences easily controlling us.

“If we were to appreciate the dialogue from this film, it delivers a message to the Malays that the strength of a nation lies in the spirit of unity and adherence to Islam,” the sultan said. – The Vibes, July 5, 2022
