KUALA LUMPUR – MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong has clarified he is still eligible to re-contest the party’s top post for another term despite having relinquished his post as Johor Baru party division head.

He took to Facebook to address speculation and criticism of his decision to make way for younger leaders in Johor Baru, saying it is not true this disqualifies him from re-election as president.

“Another important misconception to clear up is that I will not be able to contest other party positions without holding the division chairman’s post. This is not true.

“According to the party constitution, as an incumbent central committee member, I am automatically made a central delegate. On top of that, I have also been elected as one of the 16 central delegates under Johor Baru MCA.

“Thus, I am still eligible to sit for re-election as MCA president for another term. This is not in question at all,” the Ayer Hitam MP said.

On June 11, Wee announced that he had stepped down as Johor Baru party division head to make way for younger leaders.

He was replaced by Bong Seng Heng who was elected to the post in the Johor Baru division party polls on the same day.

Wee had served the Johor Baru MCA division for 30 years – 15 as its secretary and another 15 as head.
