KUALA LUMPUR – Sacked Umno leader Khairy Jamaluddin and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had their much anticipated meeting, but there is still no clarity on whether the former would be taking up the offer to join Bersatu.

Former health minister Khairy posted a photo of himself with the Bersatu president on his Instagram story earlier today but without any explanation.

According to Berita Harian, who cited Bersatu information chief Datuk Razali Idris, the meeting was held at the Perikatan Nasional (PN) chief’s residence.

Razali also said the party would let Khairy and Muhyiddin make their respective announcements, but confirmed that the former would not be forming a new party.

Speculation over Khairy joining another coalition has been a hot topic since his axing from Umno in January.

Muhyiddin confirmed on Saturday that he would be meeting Khairy today. It has been speculated that Khairy would be offered a leadership role in PN for the upcoming state elections, either in Selangor or Negri Sembilan, where he had been Rembau MP previously.

Muhyiddin, who is Pagoh MP, had made an earlier offer for Khairy to run in the state elections on a Bersatu ticket.

Khairy’s sacking from Umno was for violating party discipline during last year’s general election. He had been critical of party president Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi, saying Umno had “lost its way”.

He has said that he is considering his options but has so far appeared not to have made any decision. – The Vibes, June 19, 2023
