KUALA LUMPUR – Muda’s decision to contest the six-state elections independently has drawn significant criticism, sparking debates about the impact of split votes and its consequences on the electoral outcome.
Pakatan Harapan (PH) communications director Fahmi Fadzil expressed his disappointment over the division of votes due to Muda’s solo venture into the polls.
This fragmentation had a cascading effect, costing the unity government valuable seats by wafer-thin margins.
Fahmi’s concern centred on the close contest in Sg Kandis, where Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) Wan Dzahanurin Ahmad secured victory by a mere 167 votes over PH’s Zawawi Mughni.
Blame game
“Super close” election results in constituencies like Sg Kandis have prompted critical introspection into the role of Muda’s independent candidacy.
Netizens have also taken to social media to express their frustration, with sentiments ranging from blaming Muda for splitting votes to attributing narrow defeats to their spoiler roles.
One X (Twitter) user, @bumilangit, directly called for the ridding of Muda, citing the perceived arrogance and ignorance that led to vote-splitting.
Another user, @hermyrahim, pointedly held Muda responsible for PH’s candidate losing the Sg Kandis seat to PN, where Muda’s Afriena Shaqira secured 1,341 votes, compared to the winning majority of 167 votes.
Amidst these debates, a significant undercurrent of frustration emerged.
@faIiqfahmie sarcastically congratulated Muda for successfully splitting votes, while @Chairman_GLC expressed a clear loss of patience with the party.
Idealistic or just bullheaded?
Meanwhile, Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman took responsibility for the defeat of all party candidates, all of whom lost their deposits.
The party’s strategic choice to contest solo for the elections had led to speculation about potential negative effects on the PH-Barisan Nasional alliance’s winning prospects.
This decision led to head-to-head confrontations in several constituencies and sparked debates about the wisdom of the move.
Alternative future
Veteran DAP politician Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang had also called on Muda to consider joining DAP after the disastrous showing at the six state elections.
“When the country is faced with a choice between ‘big rights’ and ‘big wrongs’, between the opportunity to rise up again to become a world-class nation or continue in the trajectory to become a divided, failed, and corrupt state … there is no other alternative.
"I have mentioned that I admired the idealism of Muda’s candidates, although they have all lost their deposit,” the former DAP chairman and parliamentary opposition leader said in a statement today.
He also advised the party to not be disheartened by the electoral results.
As the electoral dust settles, the significant fallout from Muda’s independent candidacy underscores the delicate nature of vote-splitting dynamics and their far-reaching implications.
